So I totally had this post written since I posted the last post here back in February. I held off on posting it because I wanted to post it the next day, but held off for longer after that because I was waiting for players to decide on names. Here we are, I don’t know how many weeks after the first actual game took place and I’ve only just now posted to pre-game write up. Apparently I need to stop lining up posts before-hand. They seem to decrease my chances of getting a post out in a timely fashion, not increase it… Anyway, without further ado…

Hay, it’s been more than a week since I last posted here! Well, we can’t have that. Well, how about that update to Western Roses I’ve been promising? Yeah, that’ll do. I’ve actually had v0.6 done for a couple of weeks now, but I held off on posting it because one of the test players wanted to be Alice which meant I needed to go ahead and write rules for the Doll Master class and I kept putting off writing them until a few days ago. Then I didn’t post about it here because apparently I always have to post about things on Neko Arrange about four days after I finish them or something. Anyway, with the addition of the Doll Master class that technically makes this v0.65. Actually, it technically makes this v0.75 because the system has undergone a near complete overhaul. But it’s still getting called v0.6 because that’s what the file is saved as and we DO NOT argue with the file name. It gets very agitated very easily.
So now you’re probably sitting there in your chair thinking: Well, Ayuka/Neko/Fragile/Lineko/Tiaaaaa/whatever-name-you’re-going-by-this-week, that’s great but why should I care? Continue reading Touhou Higashijanai ~ Western Roses v0.6
Stallion, school has really taken a bite out of my time. I’m supposed to be a computer science student. What’s with all this math?! Yeah, I know computers involve a lot of math, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Oh, but that’s not really what this post is about. See, remember that thing I was working on a while back? Ya know, that Touhou RPG that I said I would probably stop writing and abandon. Yeah, in retrospect I’m not very good at keeping my word, am I? The next version of the rules, v0.6 is coming soon and it’s almost a complete overhaul of the rules, improving them to make them flow a little better as well as to be a more flexible system. Improvements you can look forward to include: A full character creation system, lacking only the ability to create options (ya know, those things that appear when you gain power in the shooters) including 8 races and a handful of classes that will be expanded upon in later rule sets. Also, the base work for the spellcard system which allows players to create spellcard decks similar to the fighting games. And a new system of rolling where a character’s stats determines the number of dice she rolls as opposed to simply trying to roll lower than a certain number (mostly because trying to roll higher than a certain number is sort of easier to deal with).
One way or another, I plan on doing character creation for the local test group this Friday which means the new version of the rules should be out within a week or so (depending on how much I overhaul the fighting system).
The newest version of Western Roses is finally here, bringing with it improved battle mechanics and the bare-bones of the character-creation system. Because this has made the game fully playable (even if it’s not all that interesting as it is now) I am dubbing this v0.5. In other words, the basic rules are about halfway done (though refining them will still take some time afterwards). Actually I’ve had this version of the rules written for about a month but I’ve been putting off posting it for a number of reasons. This is in part because it’s end of semester at school which meant my final projects for studio were due and I now have finals to study for in my lecture classes. It’s also because I’ve been running a test scenario with a group of friends who were interested in playing and I wanted to take possible changes from that into account before posting a finalized version. But I have to admit that the biggest set back has simply been a lack of personal motivation (and a friend dragging me into play maplestory hasn’t helped either), though I’ll talk more about that in my next post.
Anyway, as always, please leave comments either here or on the rules page if you happen to read them and have any advice on how they can be improved. Thank you for your time!
You remember that new content I was talking about? Well, here’s part of it: a new section where I’m adding my writing. I write both original stories and Touhou fanfiction and I’ll be posting both to the site as well as linking to where they can be found elsewhere. The first of these is A Rainy Day, a short comedic story in which Nitori’s plans are interrupted by the arrival of Marisa. you can read it on this site or at MotK by clicking one of the links on the Writing page. Just follow the link above!
More new content, updates to Western Roses, Touhou-a-Days, and more coming in the near future.
It’s been a long month. To those of you who didn’t see it, the site was down for about a week and a half during and after spring break, apparently some problem with the web host. Then I got hit with school pretty hard as well as working registration all weekend for AggieCon which, again, was scheduled on one of the worst weekends for me. Still it’s over and all that’s left is catching up on homework.
I have a lot to post about, what with a trip to New Orleans over Spring Break, some material for a new life of Project, a couple new sections I’ll be adding to the site soon, as well as more Touhou-a-Day pictures. But I’ll get to those in other posts.
For now, the big news is an overhaul of the Western Roses rule-set!
That’s right, Western Roses is now officially on v0.2, bringing with it a great number of changes all of which you can see in the changelog posted on the Western Roses page (just follow the Western Roses tab at the top of the page). This actually started as a change to the stat system, but I ended up changing a whole bunch of the rules as well as taking out several systems that didn’t make much sense in the Touhou universe. The rules are now simpler, clearer and more concise moving from 8 typed pages in Word to 6. Of course it will get bigger when I start adding more sections, but in this particular case smaller is a good thing. The next topic I will be tackling will be character creation, so keep an eye out for updates in the near future as well as new other new content for the site in the next few days. Thanks for bearing with me!

I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress due to school recently. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m switching my major and the transition isn’t going as smoothly as I’d hoped. Still, tomorrow is Spring Break and I’m looking forward to the change of pace. I’m going to be chaperoning my little sis’s trip to New Orleans, though, so unless I get something up tomorrow I won’t be posting again until Wednesday or Thursday next week.
But, anyway! Today’s Touhou-a-Day is another challenge from Flare. Not his second challenge, but the second challenge I’m doing which is just ‘draw Flandre’. So I did! Still working on the other challenges, as well as the 100th Flash Koma.
EDIT: Comments have been enabled again. WordPress keeps turning them off when it updates. Also added a picture because this post was boring.
A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a Touhou tabletop RPG and ended up stumbling upon the translated version of Danmaku Yuugi -Flowers-. I took a look at the rules, and at some of the reviews of the rules, and came to find that there were… problems with them. I still wanted to have a tabletop Touhou RPG I could play, though, so I decided that if I couldn’t find one I would make one. A friend of mine told me to look into GURPS, the Generic Universal Role-Playing System, and see if I couldn’t adapt the rules to what I needed. I did and, now two weeks later, I have come up with the first version of the rules for Western Roses, the Neko Arrange created Touhou RPG. If you’re interested, you can read the rules here or by clicking the new little tab at the top of the page labeled Western Roses. Be warned, though, it’s eight typed pages long which, although small for an RPG, isn’t a quick read.
As I said, the rules are based upon GURPS. They’ve been heavily altered and as time goes on will become even more heavily altered but for the moment, if you’re interested in playing, I suggest you take a look at the free GURPS lite rules as well as a frame of reference or to fill in any gaps I might have missed. The rules haven’t been play-tested yet, but if you have any advice on improvements (or play-test it yourself) then please leave a comment on the Western Roses page so I can know what needs to be done to make this a viable system. Thank you in advance, and I hope this project turns out well!
Well, everyone else is mentioning it, so why not me too? For those of you who (like me) tend to get news a little late, Touhou 13 has been announced under the tentative translation of Mausoleum of Divin Spirits ~ Tend Desires. Most notable is the fact that in addition to Reimu, Marisa, and Sanae, Youmu has been confirmed as a playable character. For more info, see ZUN’s blog post or the thread on Shrine Maiden. Happy Touhou-ing!
It seems that the Touhou community is abuzz with the new Guidelines ZUN posted recently with a lot of concern about what it means for the community at large. Or at least I assume there is. I’ve been gone from the internet for a while so I’m getting information a bit late and from very few sources at the moment. In ZUN’s words, however, the new guidelines are the old guidelines. Keep on keepin’ on because the fan-made work is a large part of what keeps Touhou so interesting!
