A host sister, South Africa, and the reality of Google Maps

It’s so obvious! How did I never see it before?

Today was a pretty interesting day. My sister just back from her trip to Swaziland about a week and a half ago (for those of you who don’t know, Swaziland is a small country in South Africa (well, right on the edge, really, but it’s complicated)). And today we picked up our host sister from Swaziland who will be staying with us for the next week. Yay for internationality! She’s very nice and I’m glad to have her around. I just hope that living in our house won’t give her some sort of skewed representation of America (though it probably will). This is also very interesting because, according to google maps Equestria happens to be located in South America. Our host sister didn’t mention this, and I am very disappointed. However, I am now obligated to travel there in order to visit the marshmallow ponies. Although I have to admit I’m surprised at google. I mean, I knew they were all-powerful and all, but being able to pin-point the location of mystical realms? Still can’t locate Gensokyo, though. Apparently Yukari’s border is just too powerful. It did seem to find Komachi right here in America, though.

That’s pretty much all for now. Enjoy my silly quickly-captioned image.

Motivation 0% go!

Forewarning that this post is mostly going to be me rambling in an attempt to sort out my own thoughts. If you want the long and short of things, Neko Arrange is either on hiatus until I finish the 100th Flash Koma or it isn’t and I honestly won’t know until I get there.

That being said, rambling begins now. It’s been almost a full month since I last posted anything. It’s been almost two since I last posted a Touhou-a-day drawing and those I started doing in an attempt to get things posted here. It’s been SEVEN months since I last posted a Flash Koma. I haven’t been posting regularly since September of last year. I’ve been putting off things as simple as posting things I’ve already drawn or written and I don’t even know how long it’s been since I last opened flash, much less with the intent to post whatever I worked on in it. As much as I’d love to say it’s because I’ve been busy, it’s time I stopped using that excuse. The only reason for it has been my own laziness. I’ve become accustomed to goofing off in my free time and working on personal projects during classes. When I have no classes my output drops down to nothing and that needs to change.

Not that it’s the only problem I’m facing with this website, just the biggest. There’s also the matter of taking Neko Arrange in a somewhat confusing direction recently. I always intended this site to be a collection of my work as well as general Touhou fandom, but recently I’ve been posting a lot of newer content while ignoring the other things I originally started this website for. Namely, Flash Koma which is a topic in and of itself. I think it’s Western Roses that has me the most confused. It just seems a lot different from the sort of projects and atmosphere I wanted to present with Neko Arrange. I won’t scrap it, I’ve put too much effort into it, but I’m not sure what to do with it. I’m still undecided as to whether I’m going to move it to a different site or not, but it at the very least likely won’t have it’s own heading in the future. A lot of things need to be re-organized here, actually. I’ll do my best to work on that in the near future, even if it’s only myself I’m making feel better by doing so.

And then, like I said, there’s Flash Koma. There’s already been a lot of personal drama over that and there’s no real reason to post it all again, but I will say that I realize the quality of it has been poor to say the least, particularly recently. This is mostly due to poor planning on my part. My usual approach to writing is to take an idea and then start writing with no preparation beforehand. Not that this is a bad way of doing things, but at least the way I do it it rarely ends with a final-draft worthy result. It’s good for testing the waters, but not for a finalized version. This is also something I’m working on, trying to plan things out before I start drawing and writing. There’s also a matter of the style of drawing which bugs me for a number of reasons. I’m testing out new things and hopefully by the time I start posting Flash Koma regularly again I’ll have it worked out.

There’s also the matter of the 100th Flash Koma which has been one of the biggest reasons for my lack of output. I’m sort of intimidated by the idea, I suppose, and that’s not a good thing. I should have a much more care-free approach to the series. But this hurdle is something I have to overcome before I can do the ‘normal’ series again and sometimes I’ve thought about just making the 100th one something not particularly special so that I can go back to making simple ones again. Every time I started with an idea I ended up scratching it for many of the reasons I mentioned above about how I write. As I mentioned, the way I do Flash Koma needs a lot of work, but the 100th flash is a perfect time for these changes to take place so maybe it’s simply a matter of taking a different approach. I have a couple of ideas of what to do with it now, though they may not come to fruition until I have access to a scanner (which likely won’t be until I’m home). Hopefully this will turn out well.

Originally I was going to say that Neko Arrange was on hiatus until the 100th Flash Koma was finished, but I’m not so certain anymore. After all, Neko Arrange is supposed to be about cute, there’s no reason why it has to be completely about things I’ve done and I have some ideas for things to post, most of which are Touhou-related anyway so I’m really not changing the direction of this site at all. However, what exactly happens with this is still a bit up in the air. Though I suppose I’ll find out soon enough how much longer this half-year hiatus will last.

I realize it’s probably stupid of me, but I’m posting this here mostly because I’m overly emotional, but also as an incentive to myself to actually get things done. Whether or not anyone reads this, it’s out there now and I’m going to hold myself accountable for it. After all, I’ve admitted I have a problem and it’s always the first step that’s the hardest, isn’t it?

Super Hat Girl RPG sketch

It’s been a bit since I last posted anything here. I had plans, but I’ve thrown them out the window due to flaws. The most important of them being the 100th Flash Koma. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still doing it but the original idea I had for it was poorly fleshed out and I’m going to need to start over again so that it’s not just a random sequence of events with unfunny jokes. But I kind of liked this picture so I figured I would share it anyway (besides, it’s been a while since Hat Girl has appeared on this site). The text ‘effect’ is lame, the color scheme is terrible (I’m not good with coming up with my own colors), but it’s still kinda cute. I think the little kitty critter thing will show up again at some point.

Aside from that there is the matter of Western Roses. v0.5 will be coming soon, probably within the next couple of days, and that will be the last update to it for a while. I’ve been working on it pretty hard recently and I sort of need a break from it, partially to work on schoolwork and partially because if I don’t work on Flash Koma then it may never get finished. I’ve also been messing some with different sprite colors for some of the Hisoutensoku characters that I was originally going to upload here and offer for download, but I’ve decided against it. The sprite editor is easy enough that anyone can use it and there’s not exactly a big demand for alternate colors for Soku characters anyway.

*Sigh* Well,if nothing else, I feel better having said all that.

Western Roses v0.2 is here!

It’s been a long month. To those of you who didn’t see it, the site was down for about a week and a half during and after spring break, apparently some problem with the web host. Then I got hit with school pretty hard as well as working registration all weekend for AggieCon which, again, was scheduled on one of the worst weekends for me. Still it’s over and all that’s left is catching up on homework.

I have a lot to post about, what with a trip to New Orleans over Spring Break, some material for a new life of Project, a couple new sections I’ll be adding to the site soon, as well as more Touhou-a-Day pictures. But I’ll get to those in other posts.

For now, the big news is an overhaul of the Western Roses rule-set!

That’s right, Western Roses is now officially on v0.2, bringing with it a great number of changes all of which you can see in the changelog posted on the Western Roses page (just follow the Western Roses tab at the top of the page). This actually started as a change to the stat system, but I ended up changing a whole bunch of the rules as well as taking out several systems that didn’t make much sense in the Touhou universe. The rules are now simpler, clearer and more concise moving from 8 typed pages in Word to 6. Of course it will get bigger when I start adding more sections, but in this particular case smaller is a good thing. The next topic I will be tackling will be character creation, so keep an eye out for updates in the near future as well as new other new content for the site in the next few days. Thanks for bearing with me!

Flare Challenge #2: Flandre Scarlet

I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress due to school recently. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m switching my major and the transition isn’t going as smoothly as I’d hoped. Still, tomorrow is Spring Break and I’m looking forward to the change of pace. I’m going to be chaperoning my little sis’s trip to New Orleans, though, so unless I get something up tomorrow I won’t be posting again until Wednesday or Thursday next week.

But, anyway! Today’s Touhou-a-Day is another challenge from Flare. Not his second challenge, but the second challenge I’m doing which is just ‘draw Flandre’. So I did! Still working on the other challenges, as well as the 100th Flash Koma.

Completely Random

…is the final version of the flash I did for randomizing. Unfortunately, because of loading speeds, the flash doesn’t sync up with the sound properly on the internet. Still, if you’re interested, take a look and pretend it works better than it does! Please?

So, yeah, it’s also been a bit since I last posted. This project was actually due Monday, but we presented it Friday. I figured I’d post then but ended up sleeping most of the weekend away. Oh well~! As you’ve probably noticed I’ve been trying posting different kinds of things lately, and some of them have… worked out better than others. Please continue to bear with me as Neko Arrange grows!

Randomizing: The Musical

Been busy again with school work, so here’s some more of what I’ve been working on! This time it’s the music we’ll be using for the final animation. I like it well enough and it does seem to represent random pretty well, but I like the original version better. Still, it had to be shrunk down to one minute rather than two and this works a lot better than speeding up the original and dropping the pitch did.

Randomizing Roughdraft

I stayed up all night last night and I’m just too exhausted now to do a drawing, so instead please enjoy the flash I spent all last night working on. It’s a roughdraft of my part of the animation representing the word Randomizing. Something along these lines will then be played as a texture on top of a 3D model that my partner is creating. Although this flash still needs a lot of work before it’s complete I’m optimistic about how the final draft might turn out.

Another quick flash, this one a basic storyboard for a group animation revolving around the word randomizing. It involves a lot of ink blots.

Touhou Christmas Tree

This is more than a little late considering Christmas was almost a month ago, but here is a pretty neat thing that was decorating our house while our decorations were still out. The Touhou ornaments were made by my little sister from Create.swf and it turned out pretty awesome.

As I said, last semester and Christmas break were pretty busy. I won’t go on about that, but I did find out that I was accepted into the Japan program for this summer, which means I’ll be going to Japan for about a month once this semester ends! Yay! Some friends of mine also got accepted in, so I’m really looking forward to it even if it still is a few months away.

In other, other news, I washed the shirts I made over winter break for the first time today. They’re all ruined now. I’m very sad. A few of them ended up fading out almost completely and the rest turned pink. Guess I better be more careful next time. Oh well, I’ll just remake them when I have the time.
